Facts and figures

In 2012, the Van der Hoeven Kliniek was caring for 183 patients who had been detained under a hospital order. In the same year, 23 patients transferred to a transmural follow-up facility.

Average treatment duration for patients detained under a hospital order

The starting point for detention under a hospital order is to achieve the early possible re-entry of patients into society and for this to happen in a manner that is safe for society and the patient. The average treatment period for patients at the Van der Hoeven Kliniek who had been detained under a hospital order and who were discharged in 2012 was 7.3 years. The Van der Hoeven Kliniek has an annual discharge rate of 10% to 15%.

Supervised and unsupervised leave

The Van der Hoeven Kliniek introduces leave as early as possible and puts the safety of society first when doing so. Forty-three percent of patients started supervised leave within two years in comparison with 26% nationally. In 2012, 96 patients were granted supervised leave and 32 patients unsupervised leave. The client is able to do this safely thanks to its many years of experience with the assessment of risks.

Recidivism under the national average

In 2012, two patients who had been detained under a hospital order were absent without being authorised to do so. During these unauthorised absences, no recidivism occurred. Just as in 2011, no absconsion took place from the secure zone of the hospital in 2012. The general recidivism figures for the hospital are under the national average. Besides factors that increase the risk of recidivism, the hospital also assesses protective factors (in other words, factors that reduce the risk of recidivism). By ensuring that patients develop protective factors like life, work, living accommodation, leisure activities, the careful development of a social network in combination with the ability to assess risks and promptly re-admit a patient where necessary, the pace of treatment and safety are both key. The living environment and climate in which patients live, work and learn at the hospital is based on this.
